Before the logo is a lab by Gagan Malik. It asks what a startup mark must carry and refuse, then presents one mark. Black first. A color repeats that mark. It does not offer a prompt box or a grid of generated images.

The brief

In spring 1986, in Weston, Paul Rand handed NeXT one logo and a booklet, the NeXT presentation. paulrand-next The black cube had to work before any colour did. Other colours repeated that cube. Steven Heller wrote in Design Literacy that Rand showed one logo and let the booklet speak. heller-1997 The same practice is in Thoughts on Design thoughts-on-design, A Designer's Art a-designers-art, Design, Form, and Chaos design-form-chaos and From Lascaux to Brooklyn lascaux-brooklyn.
