Notify When In Stock Is a Second Product

By Gagan Malik

Cara found the dress on the Underground on her commute in: summer sale, for an event. She picked a colour and a size, then closed the tab for work. By the time she got home that evening, Add to Bag was disabled for her size. The dress had sold out somewhere between her desk and the front door.

On johnlewis.com I led UX for Findability: search and browse so a shopper like Cara could reach stock that actually existed. The usual move is to disable the button and hope she leaves quietly. That is not finished craft. When inventory blocks the buy, the page still owes her a primary action she can complete.

Notify when in stock is not an apology under the price. It is a second job on the product page: not a footnote, but a primary action with its own success state. The waitlist must feel as finished as the bag. When you offer it, Notify must be a product. When stock will never return, offering it is theatre.

A Disabled Button Is Not a Product

Disabled purchase chrome is the system default when nobody makes a human choice, and nobody has to own what happens next. Cara does not meet that button as an edge case. She arrives with hope: colour and size already chosen, an event waiting. A disabled button crushes it.

I designed that dead end enough times to know how often it passes for finished work. The human choice is different: treat the sold-out moment as where trust is built or spent, leave the limit visible, and give her a way back when stock returns.

The Size You Cannot Buy Still Has to Be Chosen

Honesty under constraint means the stock gap stays speakable. On this control that means the unavailable size stays in the set, selected, with a strike through the tile so unavailability is obvious. Hide the size and Notify has no SKU to attach to. Leave it selectable and the waitlist knows what she wanted.

The purchase block does not merely disable. It swaps, and it stays on the page. Status copy names the fact in plain language: out of stock online. No vague softener. No extra click to a separate notify flow. The field asks for email. The primary button reads Notify me. The form sits where Add to Bag lived, inline with colour and size she already chose.

The Receipt Is the Product

A restaurant pager works because you believe the buzz will come. You do not stay because the dining room looked full from the street. Notify is the same job. The form is only half the product. The other half is the receipt.

After submit, the confirmed state replaces the form in place. Not a toast that vanishes. Not a modal that closes and leaves her unsure. The page says she is on the list, and it echoes the email she typed so the signup is unambiguous. She gave an address under hope. If stock never returns and silence follows, the next visit starts colder. That cost does not show on a closed ticket. It shows when she stops trusting the brand's "when available."

When Hiding Is Kinder

I will say the other case plainly. When the size is unlikely to come back, and Notify is mostly an email harvest, I would rather hide the tile than lie with a waitlist. A false promise trains her to ignore the next one. When stock might return, I still owe finished craft: a size she can choose, an inline Notify me, and a receipt that echoes her email. That beats a disabled Add to Bag.

Notify when in stock is a second product, or it is theatre. The shopper who typed her email for the struck-through size is not an edge case. She is the person the waitlist was supposed to serve.
