When to use
Use this pattern when a team is about to ship “thinking” chrome and needs to decide which honesty surface they are funding. Presence for latency personality. Work for tools and citations. Judgment for opt-in rationale — not as a default monologue in the reply.
Anatomy
Three mode tabs drive a shared chat frame. Presence reuses Ask-style spinner verbs. Work shows analyzing chips plus a Sources list. Judgment opens an in-frame Thought process bottom sheet with scripted paragraphs. Device toggle frames desktop versus mobile. No live model API.
Accessibility
Mode changes announce via aria-live. Sheet open and close controls meet 44×44 touch targets. Respect prefers-reduced-motion with instant sheet appearance. Colour is never the only signal for mode.
